Hi everybody! My name is Paige and I live in Ohio. I have twin daughters, Kristyn and Kileigh who are starting Kindergarten in the fall and an awesome husband who I love. We live on a farm that has been in the family for generations, and I have 2 dogs, Lakota and Mai. We raise dairy goats, heritage breed chickens and we have a lovable mini donkey named Ollie. My husband grows a veggie garden every year. (cause I would just kill it with my black thumb if I even tried to water it!) And we try to be as self-sufficient as possible. I love living out in the sticks and I just couldn't survive in city. I definitely need my space.
I am a Liberal Democrat and love to discuss politics. I love to bake and cook. I read lots, and like to fish and camp with my family. Thanks for listening/reading!

WELCOME! It's nice to have you join us!

I'm one of the admins of this crazy place, they call me Pony (seriously, people call me that in real life, too) and I have one teenage daughter, a handsome younger husband, and way too many animals (and I am adding more!!) I'm kind of the resident farmer, lol. I have a really hairy horse, a bald dog, and by this time next year I should be making my own cheese. Not that any of those things have anything to do with each other. :-)

I may pester the daylights out of you about your goats (what kind do you have? Thusrday i am bringing home a Mini Mancha, two Oberhasli/Boer crosses and not sure what I am going to get for the last one...) and especially about your heritage breed chickens! Chickens are my project for next year, assuming I have this whole goat thing under control! (I say that as if you can ever REALLY get goats "under control" lol!!)

Chit chat with us and get your post count up a little and the rest of the super secret forum will open up to you in no time!

Oh, I live in that weird mitten shaped thing right above you on the map. It's nice to find country folk who aren't die hard conservative. I'm outnumbered out here in Sticksville! That is part of why i like this forum so much.

Hi Pony! It doesn't bother me to talk about my livestock at all. It is my passion...you may just get sick of me asking you questions back! lol...Right now I have only 1 reg. Alpine doe who is due to freshen soon and 1 grade alpine buck. We had to really reduce our herd mainly due to C.A.E. Most of our livestock came from an auction, so they had some problems to begin with. Have you ever been to the Danville auction? BTW...You never can have goats under control. Leah, my doe, runs around loose all the time because she is just the best acrobat I have ever seen.
My chickens are a mixed pot. They are all free range. I have some R.I. and some Barred Rocks, but my Delaware hens are my favorite. They are so hardy but when they go broody, you don't dare go near the nest. But they save me on an incubator because they are so efficient. This year I am going to get some Buff Orphingtons, I hope. And some more Pekin ducks. (Their eggs are massive!....and great for noodles.) What kind of chickens are you getting?

I'm buying my goats from a lady down the road. I don't do auctions any more... I'm too much of a sucker. lol! her original stock all tested CAE free and honestly I am paying almost nothing for my goats so I'm just kind of crossing my fingers on that.

I haven't decided on the chickens yet, I'll be doing research on that over the next year. I WILL have some Araucanas just because I always wanted those, with their "Easter egg" coloured eggs. I want something broody that make for good moms so i can let them raise the babies for me instead of having to buy new stock each year. But I need something that makes a reasonably good meat chicken, not just eggs. So I have a lot of research to do before i make up my mind on that.

Then two years after that I am going to start beekeeping! I'm taking a year off between the chickens and the bees because my goats will be freshening and i will have my first real breeding/milking/egg laying/meat producing year and i don;t want to start something new until i have all that under control.

It's nice to meet you Amanda. I am looking forward to the other forums, but it's great to get to know people like this first. Debate will probably be the first place I go first, though. LoL

Pony, will you be butchering at home? Hatcheries have great information on the breeds they carry, so don't be shy about calling them up just for an idea. I always order from one here in Ohio because 1) they are so close and I can pick them up instead of shipping  and 2) their strains are excellent for backyard flocks. A lot of these hatcheries strive for characteristics looked for in the show ring. And while they are beautiful birds, often they loose their natural instincts and production abilities.

ROFL!  My husband likes to say that the locals tell everyone it rains a lot so no one wants to move here Smile  I'm originally from NJ and am REALLY glad I'm not there anymore... especially after all of the snow they've had this Winter!

Hi Dusty. Nice to meet you. I live in Coshocton County, close to the Holmes County line. We are not far from Millersburg at all. In fact, we go there often. Small world, huh?  biggrin

Pony, will you be butchering at home?

yes, much to the shock and dismay of most of the people I know. We have been getting by on venison we process ourselves for the last few winters, so we are used to having to do the dirty work ourselves. And with as much as it costs to have it done by a butcher around here raising our own would be pointless if we didn't process them ourselves, too.

LOL, Kimmy. If it were peaceful, I wouldn't want others moving in either. I feel kinda smothered with our population. KY is where I would love to be. You are right, the winter here has been horrible.

People are only shocked when they hear that because they don't consider how their meat gets on their table. My children help with the processing, which shocks most ppl.(they are 5) But I think it's just as important for them to know where your meat comes from as well as eggs, produce and dairy. And that we depend on these animals to survive whether they are in a feed lot at a  commercial farm, or out in our back yard.
